Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Is anyone else terrified of being in the bathroom/shower in the dark? Just me? I think I’ve seen far too many movies where things go awry when the lights go out in a bathroom. Psycho shower scene? The Roommate? Need I say more?

Anyway, tonight I had just hopped into the shower when ALL of the lights went out! Of course I screamed and shouted at my roommates like a mad woman telling them to “SAVE ME SAVE ME!” Because obviously, someone was trying to kill me. Or maybe it was just a tripped circuit breaker… ya never know.

My knight in shining armor, Meghan, fixed the circuit breaker and I was back to having light in my shower – whew!

Big-Ass Bowl of Stuff
That is exactly what I had for lunch today! I got home from class around 3:30, and was in the mood to use all of my new fruit that I bought yesterday! Into my big-ass bowl went:
  • plain greek yogurt, sweetened with a squirt of maple syrup
  • chopped apples
  • chopped strawberries
  • cocoa roast almonds
  • pretzel crumbs
  • crushed graham crackers

GINORMOUS bowl of greatness!

Kind of a random combo, but SO delicious. It had the perfect salty/sweet balance, and an awesome crunchy texture!

For dinner I was craving something peanut-y, so I decided to make my very own peanut sauce! I’ve been making it for quite a while now, and will occasionally make a more involved peanut sauce, but tonight was all about simplicity and speed. I combined a scoop of peanut butter, some soy sauce, some lime juice, a little water, and mixed it until it was all combined. Sorry for the vague measurements, but it’s much more of an eyeball it/taste it type of thing.

I cooked up some whole wheat spaghetti while roasting broccoli, yellow pepper, onions, and carrots. I threw everything into a big bowl, poured the peanut sauce on it, and topped it with some unsalted peanuts and sesame seeds.

Peanut-y dinnahh

a little closer now..

This is one of my favorite meals – you really can’t go wrong with peanut sauce!

Now I’m off to pack and hang with my roommates for a bit. I’m trying to get to bed relatively early tonight, because I’m off to Orlando tomorrow at the early hour of 8:00am! My plans include two interviews, a Lake Eola run, catching up with my old neighbors, and LOTS of hang out time with my lovely Steph. I can’t wait!

Does anyone else have big plans for the weekend? Would you FREAK if the lights turned off while you were showering!? 😛

Almonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend

Ok, maybe I changed the words a bit…but almonds are certainly this girl’s best friend!

I went from not even liking the little brown guys to being pretty obsessed with them. Exhibit A:

almond butter

Cocoa Roast Almonds

Almond Clusters

I also have slivered almonds in the pantry, and usually have almond milk in the fridge. They’re just so darn tasty!

Yesterday was (shockingly) my first time actually buying almond butter! In the past 16 hours I’ve eaten it on toast, on a graham cracker, and in overnight oats. Love. It.

Breakfast

Last night I prepped a bowl of overnight oats. Into the mix went 1/4 cup of oats, skim milk, plain greek yogurt, and cinnamon. This morning I mixed in a big scoop of almond butter and a dash of sweetener. I also had strawberries and 1/2 of an asiago cheese bagel with cream cheese.

breakfast/lunch = brunch?

This served as my breakfast/lunch since I woke up super late and didn’t eat until after 11:00!

The weather here today is terrible! It’s been pitch black and stormy all day. It makes me want to curl up in bed with my blankets! Instead, I’ve been doing homework, and I have class from 2-4pm. Luckily, that is my last class for the week, because my typical Thursday night class was cancelled! Woohoo!

I have big plans for this weekend too, so I’m excited for it to start! Hope everyone else is having a good Thursday…go eat some almonds! 😉

On Writing

Breakfast this morning was yet ANOTHER smoothie bowl, and I fear that someone will want to kill me if I post one more picture of that, so I won’t.

On my “about” page, I say that I have only recently started enjoying writing, etc. I wanted to share with you something that I wrote a few months ago that explains how I feel about writing in a much more in-depth manner. It’s pretty long, so bear with me.

On Writing

I hear the first step to becoming a writer is to, well…write. I figure if I ever want to become one, I should open up my word processor on occasion. So here I am. Why is writing so much harder than thinking? Thoughts are fluid, they run through your mind constantly, and you can’t shut them off even if you try. Why then, do they seem to cease completely when you stare at a blank page? There is so much potential in a blank page – a word document, piece of paper, even a rogue napkin. Empty space just waiting to be filled with thoughts, feelings, tales of daring, adventure, things to make you laugh, cry, and want to read more. I’m always afraid to just start – just start writing. Maybe it’s the perfectionist in me, I feel like anything I put down to that almighty blank page has to be polished and perfect. Worthy, if you will. But by waiting for the perfect thought, idea, or story to strike me, I end up never writing anything. So is it better to write random comets of thought down, or never to write at all? I’m going to try practicing the first one. Getting over the perfectionist syndrome, and starting to fill the endless white pages with some black words. Even if they’re not the perfect words, or they don’t form the perfect story or even a coherent thought. Every journey begins with a single step, as they say. My single step may not even be a whole page, but damnit, I’m going to write. As often as I can. I always think that to myself but never follow through. My most consistent writing outlet thus far has been my handwritten journal, which I have kept since sophomore year of high school. Even that I only update on occasion. I go through spurts of writing more often, but overall it’s lucky if it sees me once every two weeks. A lot of the reason behind that is because my hand gets tired easily. Now, I know that sounds like a lame excuse, but it’s so true. Even when I have the richest of stories to tell my journal, I don’t feel like it because my hand hurts after filling only a page or two. It’s a miracle if I even get the whole story out on paper. Forget about vivid details, or writing style. It’s messy and straight to the point when I do get around to writing in my journal, simply because of the logistics of my lazy hand. I have never wanted to switch my journal over to the computer, simply because it didn’t seem as authentic. However, we are in the digital age, and my hand would probably greatly appreciate the transition. But, I will keep my handwritten, non-digital journal anyway. Call me old fashioned, but I like some things to remain out of the technological realm. I would like to write other things on the computer though. Essays, stories, anything that flows through my little brain. Anything that inspires me to put pen to paper (or in this case, finger to keyboard). I just want to start writing down anything and everything, until it becomes a habit. Until I get better at it. I’ve always thought I didn’t like writing, but I’m pretty sure I just didn’t like the whole five paragraph essay, intro, body, conclusion, blah blah blah type of writing. Maybe if I write on my own terms, in my own way I will find that I love it. I have a hunch that I could, and sometimes I even picture myself as a writer. No office, no routine, just sitting at home on my couch, cup of tea in hand, laptop in lap. Writing amazing things. Short stories, a column, maybe even a novel. But if I ever want to make that a reality, I have to write!

Whew! If you made it through all or even half of that rant, kudos to you! Those are my feelings about writing, written long before I even though to start this blog. One good thing is that this blog forces me to WRITE – every.single.day. It is far from the prettiest or most interesting writing, but it’s getting me in the habit of actually doing it. Every.day. Which is good!

I hope you found this more interesting than another picture of a smoothie in a bowl! 😛 I’m off to do some homework before my total body class at 3!

Spontaneous Sweat Sesh

You know how I said I was getting back on the workout grind tomorrow? Well I lied…and got back on it toNIGHT! Woohoo. As the title says, I had a spontaneous sweat sesh because Ang was going to the gym and I tagged along. I did 20 minutes of hard intervals on the treadmill (similar to this workout) and then walked for 10 minutes to cool down.

Although it wasn’t the longest workout, it sure felt good to sweat, especially when I had already written today off as a non-gym day. 🙂

Here is my favorite article of the day – it is ADORABLE, and I’m sure all of you food lovers out there will crack a smile!

And here’s a random photo for the day:

Our roommate awkward family photo from this year 😛

We took this right before Christmas break…I’m supposed to be the dog. Have a wonderful Tuesday night! 😛

Dancing Counts As Exercise, Right?

Sorry I was M.I.A. all of yesterday! I have a confession: I did NOT end up going to total body! By the time I finished my phone interview I would have been really rushing to get there on time/get a ticket for the class…PLUS it was raining…PLUS I was lazy. So I skipped.

Instead, my exercise yesterday consisted of running a mile to Shiv’s house…and gettin’ down on the dance floor! 😉

A few of my friends and I went to a crush party for a fraternity last night. None of us are in the Greek system, but you don’t have to be to go to crush parties. Basically a fraternity takes over a club or bar for the night, and there is no cover AND there are free drinks. Um, free anything? Yes please, I am a poor college student afterall. We had a good time dancing the night away.

Shiv & me...yes, she is 5'11!

Today

Today I have a full day of class, meetings, more class, and a presentation. I generally don’t work out on Tuesdays due to a lack of time (wow, I’m just full of excuses in this post, huh?) so I guess I’ll be waiting until tomorrow to get back into my normal routine.

Breakfast was a LARGE cup of water + a smoothie in a bowl!

What went into the bullet:

  • 4 frozen strawberries
  • 4 frozen peach slices
  • 2 handfuls of frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup of greek yogurt
  • skim milk
  • 1/4 cup of dry oats

smoothie in a bowl

no spinach = pretty color for once

This smoothie was reallyyyy good, and the oats added a nice flavor to the whole thing. I’m off to get ready for the day!

Do you count dancing when you go out as exercise??

Lobsters and Pain Meds and Yogurt, Oh My!

This morning I woke up, and it looked like this outside:

dreary, drizzly day

And I pretended to be happy, and looked like this:

my i-just-woke-up-and-am-pretending-to-be-chipper face 😛

But I was kind of happy, because breakfast looked like this:

3 ingredients - simple!

oh yogurt bowls, how I've missed you!

Then I popped a few of these:

make the pain go awayyyyy!

And put on some of this:

the blue stuff

Because my back looks a little like this:

lobster-jamie

So that is my morning so far! Full of sunburns, rain, and sleepy-ness! Welcome to Monday my friends! 😛

Show Me How You Burlesque

I have been absolutely obsessed with the song “Show Me How You Burlesque” for a few weeks now, but I hadn’t seen the movie yet. Last night, all that changed! My roommate Ang and I had a roomie date night, since our other two roommates were out of town. We went to Leonardo’s which is a pizza place. I got a slice of the thick veggie pie, which had onions, peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes baked into it. On the side, I got three of their infamous garlic knots, and whew were they good! Good thing I wasn’t on a real date, because they sure were garlic-y!  😉

After pizza, we hit up Mochi! I got half snickerdoodle, half coconilla, and topped it with butterfinger, pound cake, and cinnamon toast crunch. It was gooooood!

Since dinner and dessert were out of the way, we decided to redbox it, and ended up with Burlesque. Although it’s not going to be up for an Oscar anytime soon, I really liked the movie. You just have to take it for what it is – an entertaining musical with fun costumes, catchy songs, and some smokin’ eye candy! Whew!

Today I took advantage of the beautiful weather and lounged outside for over two hours…unfortunately I have a nice sunburn on my back to show for it. 😦 I always forget just how much sunburn sucks until I get one! Boooo.

For dinner, I had a bean-tastic dish. Since I still haven’t made it to the store, I am in throw-together-whatever-is-around mode. I combined some black beans, leftover salt and vinegar chickpeas, frozen peas, corn, and carrots in a skillet, and tossed them with a little olive oil. For even more protein, I added half of a Boca burger and some cheese.

the other McSteamy 😛

I’m still trying to get into beans – I have been bean-averse my whole life, so eating the musical fruit is still quite the challenge. It’s a lot easier with dishes like this one, where I can throw them in with a bunch of other things. That way they blend in – I don’t think you’ll catch me eating straight up beans anytime soon!

Tomorrow I have a meeting, a phone interview, homework, total body, and another meeting on the agenda so far! Just another manic Monday! 😛
